Series: Hammock Camping – Your introduction to sleeping among the trees: Part 1
Part 1: Why hammock camping is so awesome
Simple. Flexible. Free.
When you think of camping, you usually immediately imagine a traditional tent – somewhere in a clearing, among trees, with painstakingly hammered-in tent pegs and a sleeping pad on hard ground. But there's an alternative that's winning over more and more adventurers: hammock camping .
Sleeping freely above the ground
Instead of struggling with uneven or wet ground, you simply float between two trees. All you need are two stable anchor points – no tent poles, no complicated setups. And best of all, you can camp in places where a tent would be unthinkable – over rivers, on steep slopes, or even between rocks.
Minimalistic travel
A hammock weighs almost nothing, rolls up compactly, and takes up minimal space in your backpack. This frees up space for more important things: good food, a camera, more water—or simply less weight on your back.
Pure nature
You sleep under the stars, feel the wind on your face, and are awakened by birdsong. No tent fabric separates you from nature – you're right in the middle of it. And that's what makes hammock camping so special.
In the next post: How to hang your hammock correctly – with tips on choosing the trees, the perfect angle and the setup for the first night.
