Part 2: Hanging your hammock correctly – this is how you set it up
A good slope is half the camp.
To get a good night's sleep, you need one thing above all: the right setup. Here's how to hang your hammock safely and comfortably—whether you're a novice or a pro.
Finding the right trees
Find two healthy, sturdy trees with a diameter of at least 15 cm. A distance of 3 to 4 meters is ideal , depending on the length of your hammock.
Avoid:
-
rotten or dead trees
-
Trees with drooping, dead branches ("Widowmaker")
The perfect angle
The optimal angle for your suspension is approximately 30° from the horizontal . This creates the ideal "banana shape" – comfortable and back-friendly.
Hanging height
Hang your hammock so that it ends at hip height. This will allow you to get in and out comfortably. The hanging points on the trees should be approximately at eye level .
Important: Use tree protection
Use wide, tree-friendly straps (e.g., moon straps) to avoid damaging the bark. This not only protects the environment but also ensures a secure hold.
Safety first
Before putting it in:
-
Check all knots and carabiners
-
Test the tension with light pressure
-
Make sure the ground beneath you is clear of sharp objects
