TRAVEL DIARIES - Island adventures in Sumba
by: Fathia – Indonesia
In 2019, Aradhea and I traveled to a remote island called Sumba , located in the East Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia. While the island is becoming increasingly popular, it's still considered a real hidden gem. Since there are few accommodations there—most of which are rather expensive resorts or hotels—we opted for the backpacking option with Ticket To The Moon's lightest hammock .
We have a close relationship with the TTTM team in Bali , and did you know? Since 2006, TTTM has been working on Sumba with its own foundation to improve the living conditions of the local people – back then, there was no electricity or running water. We decided to stay at one of the foundation's accommodations to give something back and learn more about Sumba's culture at the same time.
We slept in a traditional Sumbanese house without walls , surrounded by the fresh sea breeze—with only our superlight hammock and mosquito nets . Initially, we hung our hammocks inside the hut, but then decided to move them outside— closer to nature .
We love the lightest TTTM hammock – it's super compact yet still very comfortable. The mosquito net reliably protects against insects , and the setup is perfect for anyone who wants to travel in wilderness without lugging a lot of camping gear. And best of all: It's super easy to set up!
