Part 8: Hammock myths – what’s really true?
We clear up misconceptions and half-truths.
There are many myths surrounding hammock camping. Some of them deter people from even trying it. Time for some clarity!
Myth 1: “You sleep badly in hammocks”
Not true – as long as you lie diagonally. Many even report better sleep than in a tent . The gentle rocking motion helps you fall asleep and relax.
Myth 2: “Hammocks are only for summer”
Wrong. With an underquilt, tarp, and warm clothing , hammock camping is possible in spring, fall, or even winter.
Myth 3: “Hammocks are unsafe”
Nonsense – if you hang them correctly . With a sturdy strap, a good angle, and healthy trees, the risk is minimal. Important: never hang higher than you're willing to fall.
Myth 4: “You need perfect trees”
Not true either. Two poles, cars, beams, or a hammock stand work just as well—there are many creative possibilities.
Myth 5: “I’m definitely going to fall out”
The typical banana shape with a low center of gravity makes falling almost impossible – even when turning over in your sleep .
