How to make your tarp waterproof again
How to keep your tarp waterproof – care tips for long-term protection
At Ticket to the Moon, we believe in durable products that last for years. But even the best outdoor gear eventually needs a little maintenance. If you own a Lightest or Fullmoon tarp and have used it regularly over the years, you may find that the water-repellent coating is starting to wear off, especially at the seams. But don't worry—it's easy to fix!
How to reactivate the waterproofness of your tarp
After intensive outdoor use, the coating may lose some of its effectiveness— this is completely normal . The good news: You can easily restore it at home.
Step 1: Soak the tarp
We recommend Nikwax TX.Direct Wash-In to renew the water-repellent properties of your tarp. Here's how it works:
-
Soak your tarp in a bucket of Nikwax solution according to the product instructions.
-
Then wipe it off carefully to avoid streaks.
-
Allow the tarp to dry completely before using it again.
This simple step will restore your tarp to its original moisture protection – almost like new!
Don’t forget the seams!
The seams of your tarp are sewn with a cotton component that expands slightly when exposed to moisture and seals. However, if the tarp is regularly packed while damp , this effect may diminish over time. Here's how to easily reseal the seams:
Step 2: Seal the seams
We recommend a seam sealant such as Silicone Seam Sealer or Gear Aid Seam Grip . This allows you to seal the seams precisely:
-
Carefully apply the sealant along the seams.
-
Make sure the stitch holes are completely covered.
-
Allow everything to cure completely according to the instructions before using your tarp again.
This will restore the full waterproofness of your tarp – and make it ready for many more adventures.
Why regular care is important
With a little care every few years, you can significantly extend the lifespan and performance of your tarp. This will keep you dry, protected, and comfortable even in adverse weather—no matter where your journey takes you.
