Series: Hammock Camping – Part 8: Hammock Myths
We're putting an end to misconceptions and half-truths.
There are many myths circulating about hammock camping. Some of them keep people from even trying it. It's time to set the record straight!
Myth 1: “You don’t sleep well in hammocks”
That's not true—as long as you lie diagonally. Many people even report better sleep than in a tent. The gentle rocking motion helps you fall asleep and relax.
Myth 2: “Hammocks are only for summer”
Wrong. With an underquilt, a tarp, and warm clothing, , hammock camping is possible even in spring, fall, or even winter.
Myth 3: “Hammocks are unsafe”
Nonsense— if you hang it properly. With a sturdy strap, the right angle, and healthy trees, the risk is minimal. Important: never hang it higher than you’d be willing to fall.
Myth 4: “You need perfect trees”
That's not true either. Two posts, cars, beams, or a hammock stand work just as well—there are lots of creative options.
Myth 5: “I’m sure I’ll get kicked out of there”
The typical banana shape with a low center of gravity makes it almost impossible to fall— even when you roll over in your sleep.
