Series: Hammock Camping – Part 2: How to Hang a Hammock Properly
A good slope is half the battle when it comes to setting up camp.
To get a good night's sleep, you need one thing above all else: the right setup. Here's how to hang your hammock safely and comfortably—whether you're a beginner or a pro.
Finding the Right Trees
Find two healthy, sturdy trees with a diameter of at least 15 cm. The ideal distance is 3 to 4 meters —depending on the length of your hammock.
Avoid:
-
rotten or dead trees
-
Trees with overhanging, dead branches ("Widowmaker")
The Perfect Angle
The optimal angle for your suspension is about 30° to the horizontal. This creates the ideal “banana shape”—comfortable and gentle on your back.
Mounting Height
Hang your hammock so that it ends at hip height. That way, you can get in and out comfortably. The attachment points on the trees should be roughly at eye level .
Important: Use tree protection
Use wide, tree-friendly straps (such as Moon Straps) to avoid damaging the bark. This not only protects nature, but also ensures a secure hold.
Safety First
Before loading:
-
Check all knots and carabiners
-
Test the tension by applying light pressure
-
Make sure the floor beneath you is free of sharp objects
