Series: Hammock Camping – Part 3: How to Lie Properly in a Hammock
Comfort starts with the right angle.
Many people get into a hammock for the first time and lie straight across it—head on one side, feet on the other. That’s comfortable for a quick nap, but not ideal for a restful night’s sleep.
The trick: Lie diagonally
If you tilt your body slightly diagonally to the centerline of the hammock, it creates a flatter lying surface. This provides optimal support for your back and prevents pressure points—which means better sleep without back pain!
Stable and safe
The hammock's characteristic "banana shape" not only ensures comfort but also safety. With this shape, your center of gravity is low—which minimizes the risk of falling out.
Accessories for Even Greater Sleeping Comfort
-
A small pillow (or the hammock bag filled with clothes) supports the neck.
-
A rolled-up piece of clothing placed below the knees helps relieve pressure on the lower back.
-
Underquilts or sleeping pads protect against heat loss from below—especially important in cooler temperatures.
Side sleepers welcome
You don't have to lie stiffly on your back—in a well-tensioned hammock, you can also sleeping on your side . Just try out what feels best for you.
