Series: Hammock Camping – Part 4: The Perfect Gear
What you really need—and what you can add depending on the weather and your adventure.
Hammock camping is minimalist—and that’s exactly what makes it so great. But with the right accessories, you can significantly enhance your comfort and expand the ways you can use it.
The Basic Setup
There are three things you always need:
-
Hammock
-
Suspension (e.g., Moon Straps or Nautical Ropes)
-
Carabiner or S-hook for connecting
For Protection & Comfort:
-
Tarp: Protects against sun, rain, and wind
-
Mosquito Net: For peaceful nights without buzzing nuisances
-
Underquilt: Keeps you warm from below in cool temperatures
-
Top quilt or sleeping bag: For extra warmth from above
For Order & Safety:
-
Drip Lines: Prevent water from running down the ropes
-
Hanging System or Gear Loops: For hanging a backpack, headlamp, or shoes
-
Dry bag or trash bag: To protect gear from moisture and dirt
Optional but practical:
-
Hammock Sleeve: Protects your hammock when not in use
-
Seat pad or sleeping pad: For a campfire or as a backup
-
Small Pillow: For extra neck support (or use the stuff sack)
In the next post: How to find the perfect spot for your hammock—from trees to the beach, from the garden to the mountains.
