Series: Hammock Camping – Part 5: Finding the Perfect Spot
Whether it's the woods, the beach, or your balcony—here's how to find the right spot to hang out.
The greatest freedom of hammock camping is that you don't need level ground. All that matters are two secure attachment points—and you can find those in all sorts of places.
The Classics: Trees
In the woods or a park, there are plenty of options—two sturdy, vibrant trees spaced just right are all you need. Make sure they're healthy and that there are no loose branches hanging over you ("widowmaker").
Above the Water
If you're brave enough and have the right setup, you can also set up your hammock over a stream or lake. The sound of the water lapping against the water's surface is sure to lull you to sleep.
At the beach
With palm trees or hammock stands you bring along, you can turn even a spot on the beach into a hammock oasis—perfect for watching sunsets and listening to the sound of the ocean.
In the mountains
Want to sleep high up among the rocks or on a mountainside? With the right gear, it's no problem—as long as you always keep safety in mind.
In your own yard or on your balcony
You can enjoy that hammock feeling right at home, too. With wall hooks, special stands, or a clever DIY setup, your balcony will become an oasis of relaxation.
