Series: Hammock Camping – Part 6: Tips for Your First Night
Here's how to make your first time really great.
Your first night in a hammock can be magical—if you keep a few things in mind. Here are the most important tips to get you started.
1. Don't hang it too high
The classic beginner's mistake: The hammock is hung too tightly and too high. Hang it so that your bottom is about 50 cm above the ground —this makes it easier to get in and increases safety.
2. Stay Warm
Even on mild nights, it gets cold quickly in a hammock—especially from below. An underquilt or sleeping pad are your best friends. A lightweight sleeping bag or blanket also provides warmth from above.
3. Don't forget your mosquito net
If you're sleeping outside, you'll need a mosquito net is a must-have. It not only protects you from insects but also improves the quality of your sleep.
4. Have everything within reach
Set aside a little space next to the hammock for your water bottle, headlamp, or power bank. A gear organizer or a simple cloth bag hung from the tree will do just as well.
5. No stress, no pressure
Your first night will be an experience—but you don't have to sleep perfectly. It's about getting in touch with nature and learning. Every night gets better!
